the throne of China for fifty years. Ambitious,
xenophobic, anti-modern and superstitious, she lived a
life of luxury and ostentation to the detriment of her
country. Her rule, rather then preserving traditional
Chinese culture as she desired, undoubtedly hastened
the dominance of China by the foreign influences.
